Amazon Drones Are Coming to 500 Cities. Should Truckers Be Worried?

Amazon is getting ready to expand drone delivery to nearly 500 U.S. cities and towns by the end of 2026. And when truck drivers hear something like that, there is an obvious question: is this eventually going to take freight away from trucks? Because 500 cities does not sound like some little test program anymore.

Amazon's long-term goal makes that question even bigger. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy says Prime Air plans to serve communities with about 30 million customers by the end of this year. And by the end of this decade, Amazon wants drones delivering 500 million packages a year. Half a billion packages. That sounds like a lot of freight leaving the road.

But before anybody starts taking pictures of the truck for Facebook Marketplace, there is one number that changes this whole story: five pounds. Amazon says its Prime Air drones are designed to carry packages weighing up to five pounds. Five. Not 5,000. Not 40,000. Five pounds. And that tells us pretty quickly which part of transportation Amazon is actually trying to change.

What Amazon is doing

Amazon currently operates drone delivery from a relatively small number of hubs, but the company is preparing for a much larger rollout. Amazon told Reuters that Prime Air currently operates from 11 locations, with one hub capable of serving multiple nearby communities. The plan is to expand the service to around 500 cities and towns by the end of 2026.

That does not mean Amazon is going from 11 cities to 500 cities. That is an important distinction. Those 11 are operating locations or drone hubs. One hub can cover several nearby communities.

Amazon says a typical drone delivery area can extend roughly 7.5 miles from the facility. Its newest Prime Air operation in the United Kingdom uses that same 7.5-mile service radius.

So think of the hub like a small delivery base. The drone leaves that location, flies a few miles, drops off the package, and comes back. This is very different from a truck picking up freight in Atlanta and delivering it in Chicago.

Now let's compare the freight

Take a dry van carrying 40,000 pounds of freight. Amazon's drone can carry five pounds. To move 40,000 pounds five pounds at a time, you would need about 8,000 drone deliveries. Eight thousand. And that is assuming every single drone is carrying the full five pounds.

At that point, Amazon does not need more drones. Amazon needs somebody with a CDL.

But that comparison also shows why truckers should not completely ignore this. The drone does not need to replace the entire truckload. That is not what Amazon is trying to do. The real target is the last mile.

Follow the package

Here is the easiest way to understand it. A manufacturer produces thousands of products. Those products need to get into Amazon's distribution network. Maybe they travel by container. Maybe by rail. Maybe by truck.

Eventually, a tractor-trailer arrives at an Amazon facility carrying thousands of pounds of merchandise. That part still happens. The trailer gets unloaded. The products get sorted.

Then somebody living five miles away orders a phone charger. That phone charger might weigh one pound. Normally, it could be loaded onto an Amazon delivery van along with a bunch of other packages. The driver leaves the facility. Drives through the neighborhood. Stops at the house. Gets out. Walks to the door. Drops off the package. Gets back in. And continues to the next stop.

Prime Air is trying to remove that last little piece. Instead of putting the phone charger on the van, Amazon can put it on a drone. The drone flies directly to the customer and drops off the package.

The tractor-trailer still brought the freight into the network. The local delivery vehicle lost one stop. That is the part truckers need to understand.

The big trucks are not the first target

Amazon has already explained that Prime Air is being integrated into its existing fulfillment network, including Same-Day Delivery facilities. That is important. Amazon is not building some magical transportation system where a drone flies to China, grabs an iPhone, crosses the Pacific and drops it in somebody's backyard.

Somebody still has to move that inventory. And moving inventory in bulk is exactly what trucks are good at. A five-pound drone is good at carrying one small package a few miles. A tractor-trailer is good at carrying tens of thousands of pounds hundreds of miles. Those are two very different jobs.

So if you are an owner-operator pulling a dry van, reefer, flatbed, tanker or another Class 8 trailer, Prime Air is not currently designed to replace what you do. The drone cannot haul a truckload of produce. It cannot move steel. It cannot carry 26 pallets. It cannot pick up a 42,000-pound broker load. And thankfully, it cannot call dispatch every 20 minutes asking why the receiver still has not unloaded it.

But somebody could lose transportation work

The bigger risk is farther down the supply chain. Last-mile package delivery. Amazon delivery vans. Local parcel drivers. Other vehicles making short residential deliveries. Those are the trips where drones can actually compete.

Because if somebody orders a two-pound item and lives six miles from the Amazon facility, Amazon has a choice: put the package on a van with other packages, or fly it directly to the customer. If the drone eventually becomes cheaper, faster and reliable enough, the money starts making the decision.

That is why Amazon's 500-million-package goal matters. Let's break that number down. Five hundred million drone deliveries a year divided by 365 days comes to roughly 1.37 million packages per day. That is a lot of packages.

But again, it does not mean 1.37 million delivery vans disappear every day. One van can carry many packages. So if a drone removes one package from a van route, the van probably still runs. Even ten drone deliveries might just mean that driver makes ten fewer stops.

But now keep increasing the number. If enough packages disappear from enough routes, eventually Amazon may be able to shorten routes. Maybe a route that needed two vans can eventually be handled by one. Maybe fewer miles are driven. Maybe fewer vans are needed in a particular area. And eventually, maybe fewer drivers are needed to move the same number of packages.

That is where the real job impact could show up. Not overnight. Not everywhere. But that is the part of transportation these drones are actually competing with.

Why Amazon wants to do this

Last-mile delivery is expensive. Think about everything involved in getting one little box from a local facility to somebody's front porch. You need a vehicle. You need a driver. The vehicle needs fuel or electricity. It needs insurance. It needs tires. It needs maintenance. Then that vehicle spends the day stopping and starting every few houses.

A drone does not need to sit in traffic. It does not need a parking space. It does not need to walk from the curb to the front door. And it definitely does not call in sick on Monday morning.

So if Amazon can eventually move certain small packages for less money using drones, it has a huge financial reason to do it. Multiply even a small savings by hundreds of millions of packages and suddenly you are talking about serious money. That is what makes this more than a cool technology story. This is a transportation-cost story.

Amazon still moves an enormous amount of freight the regular way

There is another number worth remembering. Amazon says Prime members in the United States received more than 8 billion items through same-day or next-day delivery in 2025. Eight billion.

Compare that with Amazon's future goal of 500 million drone packages per year. Even if Amazon eventually reaches that drone goal, it would still represent only one piece of an enormous delivery network.

And all those products have to get somewhere before the final delivery happens. That means trucks. Warehouses. Trailers. Distribution centers. Linehaul. Local transportation. The drone changes one part of the chain. It does not erase the chain.

So should truckers be worried?

For most Class 8 truck drivers, not because of these drones right now. If your job is hauling 40,000 pounds between warehouses, manufacturers, distribution centers and receivers, Amazon's five-pound drone is doing something completely different. Your freight still needs to move.

But if your job depends heavily on delivering small individual packages from a local facility to people's homes, this technology deserves much closer attention. That is where Amazon is trying to remove miles. That is where it can remove stops. And that is where the money could eventually lead to fewer vehicles and fewer drivers.

The practical lesson is pretty simple. Whenever somebody says a new technology is going to replace trucking, don't immediately ask whether it can replace a truck. Ask which part of the trip it can replace. Because transportation is not one job. There is the truckload coming into the warehouse. There is freight moving between facilities. There is regional transportation. And then there is that final little trip from the local facility to somebody's front porch.

Amazon's drones are going after that final little trip. So yes, Amazon wants drones flying around hundreds of American cities. And yes, Amazon eventually wants them delivering 500 million packages a year. That is worth paying attention to.

But if you're sitting behind the wheel with 40,000 pounds in the box, don't panic because a five-pound drone just flew over the interstate. For now, it wants the phone charger. Not your load.
